James

James: A Quick Summary

           The book of James was most likely written by Jesus’ half brother James to the jewish believers that were scattered throughout the Roman Empire. It was likely written during the time when the Jews were dispersed from Rome due to conflict in the city. James is very upfront with the people, warning against hypocrisy and explaining the importance between faith and the works that prove what you believe. (2:14-16) He states very clearly that it is not the works that redeem us, but that our works are a picture of our faith. (2:19-20)  He speaks of having control on the tongue and using it to only build up. (3:1-12) He encourages them to love and give to the poor, this is the foundation of our work as believers! (1:26-27) Run from sin! Don’t not let it fester your lives.(1:19-21) But over all, James demands “If you are wise and understand God’s ways, prove it by living an honorable life, doing good works with the humility that comes from wisdom.” (3:13)
