Hebrews Homework: Quick Summary

          Hebrews was written by an unknown author to the Jews living in the Roman empire during the reign of Nero. They were most likely undergoing severe persecution and many were in danger of falling back to the comfort of a legalized religion. The author of Hebrews however was encouraging the people to persevere. (12:11-12) They were told that Jesus was better than what they were going back to because the law was abolished through the shedding of his blood. He is greater than the angels (1:4), greater than Moses (Chapter 3), greater than Joshua, (4:8-11) and he himself now acts as mediator between God and man. Jesus is the new High Priest. (5:8-10) The people are being warned against their unbelieving hearts and are urged to turn back to Jesus. It is here that we are given the infamous passage of faith followed by the commission to run the race enduring all things for the sake of Christ, even when they don’t see the promises fulfilled with their own eyes. (Chapters 11-12) For Jesus died as a sacrifice once and for all and through him we have been given a new a better covenant. (7:27) (8:6-7) So persevere and be faithful!
