1. Write one paragraph explaining the historical background and purpose of the book.

Joel was written for the people of Judah possibly while they were in exile or even just after. There were no kings mentioned in the book, so there is debate on this. The people had just been under rule of wicked, pagan kings that were intense idol worshippers. But now that they were gone, Joel seized the opportunity to encourage change and turn the people’s hearts back to God. 

Joel focuses on the fact that God wants your whole heart and you cannot share His worship with idols. He is offering redemption when hearts are turned back to him. (2:12-13) Joel is a book of hope for the people because even in the midst of idol worship, he wants ultimately wants to redeem them back to himself. That is how he his people will know that He is the Lord, through his great mercy. (2:27-29)

2. What does this book show of the Character and Nature of God as well as His plan for redemption?

We truly see God’s heart for his people through the book of Joel. Although there is judgement, Joel is a book about hope. We see in 3:9 that even in their idol worship, the Lord will go to battle for his people. “The Lord will be a refuge for his people, and strong fortress for the people of Israel.” (3:16). In the same way, we see the Lord’s plan for redemption in the promise of a remnant. He says in 3:20 “But Judah will be filled with people forever, and Jerusalem will endure through all generations.” He will not let the judgement be the end of his chosen.
