Malachi

Malachi Homework

1. Write one paragraph explaining the historical background and purpose of the book.

The book of Malachi was written to the Israelites after they had been out of exile for some time. The temple and walls have been rebuilt and they were beginning to fall back into ritualistic faith. They have fallen into sacrificing their worst animals (1:7) and adultery (2:14). They began to give God just half of their heart thinking that it would be enough as long as they continued in the routine. But through the very unique question and answer format, God was encouraging them to not back down and to continue on because he has good things in store for them. (4:2)

2. What does this book show of the Character and Nature of God as well as His plan for redemption?

Through this book, we really get a glimpse of God’s passion for his people. It begins with him saying “I have always loved you.” Followed quickly by “Really? How have you loved us?” (1:2) What an incredible and faithful God to love and seek after his people even when they don’t see it and except it. He is jealous, just, and merciful to his people. He promises redemption and hope for the future in the form of the Messiah! (3:2-4)

3.  Application

God hates divorce (2:16). He says it so clearly. Marriage is meant to be a picture of God’s relationship with his people. That’s why he has commandments against marriage among nation and about adultery. We make a vow before God and he see's it. (4:14) God calls out to his people and says “guard your heart; do not be unfaithful to your wife!” (2:16) Yet the divorce rate among the church is just as high as unbelievers. There is little value on family and purity. This should not be among the church.
