1. Write one paragraph explaining the historical background and purpose of the book.

Zephaniah was written during the reign of Josiah when all may have appeared to be going on the uprise within Judah. He was leading the people in a spiritual reformation, although only surface deep. The leaders among the people had fallen deeply into corruption. There was injustice upon the poor and the needy and it was the majority of the religious rulers that were the cause (3:3). There was even idol worship among them and they were falling deeper and deeper into it. (1:5)  Zephaniah was calling the people to judgment, yet still instilling hope for the poor and needy of Judah. 

2. What does this book show of the Character and Nature of God as well as His plan for redemption?

Even when there is no other good, when those who are supposed to fight for you stand idol, God is still good. He is the defender of the poor even when those in power do nothing. (3:4-5) God does not stand for injustice and abuse of power over the needy. (3:11) He promises that if they people turn back and reform their ways, he will continue to dwell among them (3:15). He wants to be with his people and to draw them out of their sins! (3:20). While he is just, he always desires mercy.
